BUENOS AIRES, June 1 (Reuters) – Racing Club de Avellaneda, one of the most popular clubs in Argentine soccer, won an agonizing 1-0 victory against Deportivo Riestra on Saturday and maintained leadership in the Professional League.

With the victory on the fourth date, Racing reached 10 points in the standings, three ahead of seven teams that follow as runners-up.

“We have to continue like this, not think that we are candidates. This is football and it is day by day,” said Racing technical director Gustavo Costas.

The only goal of the match played at the Presidente Perón stadium in front of 40,000 fans was scored by Santiago Solari in the 96th minute, after a cross from Agustín Almendra and an assist from Maximiliano Salas.

In another match on Saturday, Belgrano de Córdoba beat Argentinos Juniors 1-0 at home thanks to a long-distance shot by Gerónimo Heredia in the 66th minute that surprised goalkeeper Diego Rodríguez.

Belgrano played with one man less from the 36th minute due to the expulsion of Pablo Chavarría.

“The games are very often difficult for us,” Heredia told local television, after the victory with 10 players.

For their part, Vélez Sarsfield and Atlético Tucumán tied 1-1 with goals from Claudio Aquino and Mateo Coronel, respectively. (Reporting by Ramiro Scandolo. Editing by Carlos Calvo Pacheco)
