Without migration, the population of Tierra del Fuego could be reduced by half within 50 years

The Fueguina Innovation Foundation (FINNOVA) published a report indicating that Tierra del Fuego was positioned as the fourth province with the lowest fertility rate in the country with 1.3 percent, ahead of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Neuquén, and warned that if there were not Migrations could reduce the population by half within 50 years.

Although this monitor also includes the fact that Tierra del Fuego was the province that had the greatest population growth in twelve years –46% according to the latest INDEC 2022 census – highlights that it is due to a migration phenomenon. Although regarding the low fertility rate “it reflects a decreasing trend observed both in Argentina and worldwide.”

“The fertility of a woman is translated in terms of the number of daughters and sons born alive that she has had during her fertile period (practically, between 14 and 49 years). At the country level, there are 12,382,860 women between 14 and 49 years old. Of them, 57.5% with children born alive, and 42.5% without children. From the first percentage (7,126,256 women), it is derived that the fertility rate is close to 1.4 children per woman,” the document explains.

And he adds: “Tierra del Fuego has the fourth lowest fertility rate in the country, which contrasts markedly with its position as the province with the greatest population growth between the last two censuses, driven mainly by migrations. According to calculations carried out, if If there were no migrations, the population of Tierra del Fuego could be reduced by half in a period of between 40 and 50 years”.

In contrast to the island, it also details that Santiago del Estero, Misiones and Formosa are the provinces that registered the highest number of children per woman with 1.7%. They are followed by San Juan, Salta, Jujuy, Chaco and Corrientes (1.6%).
