La Rioja asks Health to take extraordinary measures to address the lack of professionals in the summer

The Minister of Health and Social Policies of the Government of La Rioja, María Martín, will demand this Wednesday, June 5, during the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS), extraordinary measures by the Ministry of Health to have professionals with whom to cover the summer health plan.

In this extraordinary Council, which is held at the request of La Rioja, Cantabria, Castilla León, Aragón, Murcia, Valencia, Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Andalusia, Extremadura and Galicia and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, La Rioja intends to address the shortage of Primary Care doctors in the National Health System, a situation that is further complicated by the lack of substitutes during the summer holidays.

“A problem that is also added to the lack of resident doctors, taking into account that in 2020 there was a delay in the incorporation of MIRs into the training period due to the pandemic, which did not occur until September 2020 and “That, therefore, the completion of their training is also delayed,” the Government of La Rioja has stated. “For years, the autonomous communities have alerted the Ministry of the need for it, in the exercise of its powers, to take measures to prevent the end of their training stage from being delayed until September, once the summer period has passed, without success,” have added.

In this sense, María Martín sent a letter last week to the Minister of Health, Mónica García, to insist on the need to analyze the situation of these resident doctors; as well as the urgency of addressing initiatives by the Ministry of Health to minimize the impact of not having enough doctors on the summer plans of the autonomous communities.

In Spain it is estimated that there is a shortage of Primary Care doctors that ranges between 15% and 20%. This situation is complicated by the lack of substitutes during the summer holidays and the delay in the training of the 2,300 MIR IV, key to compensating for the lack of professionals in the summer period throughout the country.
