The government of Cuba today evaluated government actions to address factors associated with the high fertility rate in adolescence, in a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero.

According to a Cuban television news report, the meeting was held by the government commission in charge of analyzing the Demographic Dynamics on the Caribbean island where 82 percent of adolescent fertility corresponds to the age group of 15 to 19 years. age.

Likewise, 18 percent of pregnant women at that stage of life are under 14 years old, a phenomenon that, according to health specialists in the Antillean country, has a broad impact on social, educational and health issues.

Pregnancy in adolescence has become natural and there is little perception of the risk of its consequences for the physical and psychological development of girls and adolescents, experts from that government commission pointed out.

According to the first vice minister of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, Tania Margarita Cruz, the statistics on adolescents under 15 years of age show a clear trend toward increasing fertility and also the rate of abortions.

In this sense, the Antillean head of government assured that this phenomenon requires an intersectoral view with the participation of the provincial governments.

The members of the Commission for Attention to Demographic Dynamics pointed out that the provinces with the highest adolescent fertility rate are the eastern ones, Las Tunas, Camagüey, Granma and Holguín.

In this scenario, it is urgent to implement the measures designed by the health system and the Antillean executive in the preventive, training, legal-criminal and family order, in correspondence with the Cuban Family Code, the journalistic report noted.
