La Pampa took its claims to Mendoza

At the same time, he referred to the “unfortunate statement” of a mayor very close to the provincial boundary: “Boundary, not border, because we are not two different countries. We are two provinces of the same country and there is a Court resolution that indicates that La Pampa must receive a certain flow of water from Mendoza”.

“This, for me, should be something natural in accordance with the historical claim of our Province,” completed the minister who responds to Governor Sergio Ziliotto.

From the Pampas administration they recalled that “on July 16, 2020, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation decided to set as an interim goal a minimum permanent flow of the Atuel River of 3.2 m³/s on the border between La Pampa and Mendoza” .

“This flow was recommended as an instrument to stop the environmental damage caused by the lack of runoff from the Atuel River in Pampas territory,” they noted.

Di Nápoli’s words referred to a meeting that the mayors of southern Mendoza held days ago with the aim of defending their province’s position on the Atuel River.

Scrum of Mendoza mayors against La Pampa

The mayors of General Alvear, Alejandro Molero; from Malargüe, Celso Jaque; and from San Rafael, Omar Félix.

During the conclave, Molero said: “We are not going to give up in the defense of the Atuel River, because our lives are gone, our production is gone, our livelihood is gone. “Water is not only for human consumption but also what can bring progress, development and growth to the people.”

“I think that this meeting today has many connotations. Of course, making the dispute visible at the provincial level is one of the tasks to communicate. Having the possibility of taking note of each presentation and each of the positions that have been expressed,” he claimed.

Mayors of southern Mendoza and provincial officials supported the provincial position on the Atuel River.

Finally, he stated that “the possibility of requesting the necessary hearings and also making ourselves visible at the national level, I think is part of the things that we must also do, and that we have to do and we are going to do.”

That scrum also had the support of the mayor of the city of Mendoza, Ulpiano Suarez. “Defending our resources is the obligation of all Mendoza residents. From the City of Mendoza we accompany the message of political and institutional unity of the mayors of the South, Alejandro Molero, Omar Félix and Celso Jaque, in the face of a new attack by the Pampas government along the river Atuel,” he said in X.

The deputy governor of Mendoza did the same, Hebe Marriedwho maintained that “andhe Atuel, a key river for the South of Mendoza, belongs to all Mendoza residents. It is essential for the agricultural, industrial and economic development of the province, for which I appreciate the work and commitment of the three mayors: Molero, Félix and Jaque.”

At the beginning of May, Cornejo announced during the opening of ordinary sessions the release of funds from the Portezuelo del Viento megaproject, which involves that initiative. It contemplated the construction of a dam on the Río Grande, in the south of the province, and was finally suspended.

For being part of the dispute, Ziliotto from Pampa celebrated it on social networks. “We said it in 2020 and today it is a reality: ‘Portezuelo will not happen this year or ever’. 2024: Mendoza leaves Portezuelo del Viento. The fight in La Pampa was worth it,” the leader celebrated.
