A fire and a tornado put the province of Matanzas on alert this Wednesday, although fortunately there were no victims.

However, this time the flames did not occur in the area of ​​the fuel tanks, but in a weed “located behind the water tanks of the place,” according to the newspaper. Giron.

The fire did not cause human or material losses, and was controlled by forces from the Fire Department, who prevented its spread in an area of ​​great economic importance.

Its cause was attributed to the drought in the area.

After hearing the news, the Matanzas Territorial Fuel Marketing Division assured that the strategic Supertanker Base was “under control.”

For his part, journalist José Miguel Solís confirmed on his networks that the fire did not compromise “the vitality of the Fuel Derivatives Marketing company, nor of Rayonitro in the process of producing sulfuric acid.”

Tornado in Heads

Already in the afternoon, a tornado hit the Matanzas town of San Antonio de Cabezas.

The meteorological phenomenon made landfall with its funnel shape at 4:25 PM, according to the Provincial Meteorological Center.

Local residents reported that “in one part of the town (the tornado) passed about three times and it felt strong,” according to a publication from the Government of Matanzas.

Despite this, there were no injuries or deaths, while the main damage was to homes.

“The neighbors claim that they have never felt such severity of the weather and that the damage could have been greater,” the report states.

According to the source, a total of 19 houses suffered damage to the roofs, although resources for their recovery would begin to arrive in the territory this Thursday, according to the first secretary of the Communist Party in the province, Mario Sabines Lorenzo.

Tornadoes are frequent phenomena in Cuba, where they can occur at any time of the year if the meteorological conditions exist for their formation.

At the end of last December, a strong storm affected the Matanzas municipality of Los Arabos. On that occasion there were no deaths or injuries, but there was severe damage to the roofs and carpentry of several homes and the power lines in the affected areas.
