A detachment of Russian warships will arrive at the port of Havana next Wednesday, the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba announced this June 6 in a note.

Upon arrival, 21 salvos will be fired from one of the ships, as a greeting to the Cuban nation, which will be reciprocated by an artillery battery from the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress.

Composed of the frigate Gorshkov, the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, the fleet oil tanker Pashin and the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker, the group will remain here until June 17.

The Russian sailors will carry out a program that, among other activities, includes a meeting with the government authorities of the Cuban capital and tours of places of cultural and historical interest.

According to the notification, the visit “corresponds with the historical friendly relations between Cuba and Russia,” in addition to complying with “the international regulations of which Cuba is a State Party.”

Visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations that maintain relations of friendship and cooperation, the text states.
