After it became known that José Ismael Peña Reyes was no longer rector of the National University, the name of the person who would replace him was released. This is Leopoldo Múnera.
In that sense, this Thursday, June 6, it was learned that Múnera is the new interim rector of the National University of Colombia, since it had the support of 5 councilors in the middle of the session under the resolution that corrected the election on March 21.
This designation comes after more than a month of Ismael Peña’s “self-possession” in the university’s rectorship.
Three members of the Higher University Council left the session, ensuring that this process is completely illegal and recorded their withdrawal.
As they had previously made known in a statement, councilors Ignacio Mantilla, Verónica Botero and Diego Torres withdrew from the session, because as they expressed it, they did not want to be part of an “illegal” vote.
Leopoldo Múnera had been elected by the majority of the university community before Ismael Peña took office and in addition, Gustavo Petro has publicly expressed his support for Professor Leopoldo.
Who is Leopoldo Múnera?
Múnera is a lawyer by profession. Likewise, he has a master’s degree in Development and a master’s degree in Philosophy of Law.
He has also served as dean of the Faculty of Law of the National University and vice-rector of the Bogotá Branch of the National University.
