Although the water parade was not included in the official calendar of the festivities of San Juan and San Pedro this year, the Departmental Administration is working to maintain the roots of this important event.

In a gesture of sensitivity and commitment to traditions and the local economy, the Government of Huila has heard the call of the canoeists and has decided to develop a parade along the Magdalena River with the ‘Myths and Legends’ that represent the Opita people. This event, which will take place on June 29, 2024, promises to be an explosion of color, music and joy.

“We are going to move this forward. The canoeists will have support from the Ministry of Culture, from Corposanpedro, in common agreement with them. We are going to take a tour to check where the parade would start from, but possibly we will choose the route that is already defined in the programming,” said Betsabé Polania Quiza, culture secretary of Huila.

It should be noted that the ‘Myths and Legends’ parade will mark the preamble to what will be the 2025 River Festival, an initiative that hopes to attract the attention of locals and visitors. Through different artistic, gastronomic, sports and environmental activities, the festival will seek to strengthen the sense of belonging of Neiva residents and promote environmental sustainability.

“The important thing here is the rescue of the river. Not just for the day of the parade, no, it should always look pretty. We are going to make alliances; in the company of the mayor of Neiva, the secretary of culture, the secretary of government. It is a cleaning beforehand, to paint, to beautify,” commented Adriana Rojas Salazar, executive director of Corposanpedro.

Rio 2025 Festival, environmental and cultural initiative

The 2025 River Festival will not only be a cultural festival, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our environment. Sustainable practices will be promoted among visitors and the population.

In the coming days, improvements will be made to the boardwalk and details are being finalized for the River Festival, which will take place on June 29. The representative of Aso Fluviales expressed his gratitude for the agreement reached through dialogue and respect. “We thank everyone involved for recognizing the importance of the river for our municipality and department. We have agreed to hold the River Festival to show our culture and tradition, with the commitment of greater organization in the coming year.”

A promising future for the holidays

Within the framework of the Bambuco Festival in San Juan and San Pedro, a technical panel has been formed made up of representatives of the Government and the different sectors involved in the festivities. This table aims to analyze the impact of events held in previous years, identify the strengths and weaknesses of the festivities, and propose strategies to improve the quality of programming and guarantee the success of future editions.
