The Deliberative Council of Córdoba unanimously approved in the session this Thursday, a draft ordinance that extends the duration of the driver’s license to two years for people over 70 years of age. For it to come into effect, the Executive Department needs to promulgate the regulations, something that would happen in the short term as stated by the Municipality.

The regulations in force in the city of Córdoba required people over 70 years of age to renew their driving licence every year.

The new legislation approved modifies article 21 of ordinance 9,981 – Municipal Traffic Code – and establishes that the license for this age group will be valid for two years, “prior to completing the corresponding exams.”

And it adds that driver’s licenses issued prior to the entry into force will remain valid until the expiration of the period for which they were granted, “from which all the provisions relating to their granting, validity and content indicated” will govern. the new regulations.

The initiative had been presented by the radical councillor Juan Balastegui, and was based on the claim of people over 70 years of age, who must face the economic burden and the annual process of renewing the license.

Balastegui had also proposed a reduced fee for license renewal for those who receive the minimum pension. That idea was not accepted by the ruling party.

“This Project arose from complaints from residents of Córdoba who saw discriminatory treatment regarding the renewal of driver’s licenses for people over 70 years of age, which were limited by age and not by psychophysical aptitudes,” he argued. the councilor on the premises.

And he added: “It is equal treatment and a tone of justice for this age group that has been punished by society and the State, in many cases receiving minimum salaries.”

Balastegui said that the State should support these people “who arrive with a lot of experience in driving and are not the ones who cause accidents, as confirmed by the specialists who passed through the commission.”

From the ruling party, councilor Marcos Vázquez valued the debate that took place in commission, with guests, specialists and professionals who made their contributions.

And he highlighted that the new ordinance “recognizes rights,” while thanking the UCR for presenting the project. “The legislation of a municipality should not be the imprint of the immediate but rather we must think about the future,” he stated.

When does it come into effect

For the new ordinance to come into force, it must be promulgated by Mayor Daniel Passerini and published in the Municipal Official Gazette.

High-ranking sources from the Municipal Executive Department told La Voz that the regulations were studied in depth and would be implemented quickly. In addition, being right in the middle of the year, it will allow for the implementation of communication campaigns that will allow beneficiaries to learn about the new ordinance.
