The funniest opera of 2023 returns to the stage: “The Elixir of Love.” The performances will be on June 13, 14 and 15 at 9 p.m. at the San Martín Theater (Av. Sarmiento 601).

Recreated entirely by Tucumán artists, this comic opera in two acts has two casts, the participation of the Stable Orchestra of the Province, the Stable Choir, the Contemporary Ballet, the Puppet and Marionette Theater, actors from the Cultural Entity, and more than 150 artists on stage.

The General Musical Direction is in charge of Mtro. Jorge Bulacia Soler; The Stage Direction is by Regisseur Jorge de Lassaletta, and the scenery is by Architect Juan Carlos Malcún. The Assistant Director is Soledad Alastuey, and the accompanying pianists Oscar Buriek and Javier Ramos. He directs the Stable Choir of the Province. Mr. Ricardo Sbrocco; Contemporary Ballet, Patricia Sabbag; the Puppet and Marionette Theater, Romina Muñoz.

With music by Donizetti and a libretto by Felice Romani – based on the libretto Le philetre by Eugène Scribe -, the work was premiered at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan in 1832. It has beautiful melodies and “Una furtiva lágrima” stands out, one of the most famous tenor arias.

The original setting takes place in an 18th century village, but this setting is from the 1930s. The work revolves around rejection and social differences, showing love as an egalitarian sign through the false elixir. Nemorino, a young man without money or work, is the least interesting candidate for the women in his town. He is madly in love with Adina, a well-off peasant woman, who constantly rejects him, even for fun, generating ridicule from local women and men.

Obsessed by her, Nemorino listens to the story of “Tristán and Isolde” and of a filter (elixir) of love that, upon drinking it, Isolde falls in love with Tristán with great passion. Nemorino wants to find that elixir. A peddler (seller of ointments and special products) arrives in town and the young man looks for the “elixir of love”; The cunning seller, deceiving him, gives him a Bordeaux wine in a special pot.

Through very human events, the comedy proves right this elixir, which is nothing more than wine. Meanwhile, Adina, without knowing it, begins to fall in love with him due to so much loving insistence. Finally, Nemorino inherits a large fortune from an uncle and becomes the most interesting candidate for all the women in the town.

In the main roles, Nemorino, a simple peasant in love with Adina, will be played by Lucas Arrieta; Adina, a rich and capricious peasant, will be led by the singers Josefina Viejobueno and Cynthia del Carril; the role of Dr. Dulcamara, a trickster doctor, will be played by Marcelo Oppedisano; Sergeant Belcore will be played by Matías Safarsi; Giannetta – Adina’s friend – will be in charge of Paula Lozano and Claudia Manrique. The actors and puppeteers Sebastián Bulacio, Gonzalo Veliz, Federico Armanini, Huerto Rojas Paz and Juan Carlos Torres also participate.
