A Argentine citizen who tried to enter Chile irregularly was detained by Carabineros personnel.

It was detected in the Los Libertadores complex when he tried to evade the vehicle control that the troops were carrying out on the international road near the border outpost and forced the participation of Carabineros who chased him and managed to stop him at the moment when they observed the car full of cigarettes.

The arrested person, 42 years old, residing in the city of Mendoza, was placed at the disposal of the Los Andes Guarantee Court to be formalized by the local Prosecutor’s Office.

Regarding this police procedure, the Captain Giovanni Tamburrino Baeza, deputy commissioner of the Carabineros of Los Libertadoreshe noted exclusively The Andes Online that “on Thursday morning he was with his staff carrying out inspections on Route CH-60 with the purpose of verifying that people entering and leaving the country comply with the corresponding documentation and procedures, as well as detecting any transportation of illicit items. It was thus that around 11:30 a.m. they noticed that a Chevrolet Cobalt model car that was entering our country crossed onto the opposite lane and moved against the direction of traffic, then passed by the side of the old complex and returned to the international route, without having accessed the current complex, thereby evading immigration and customs controls,” he noted.

“When carrying out the vehicle check, we immediately realized that the driver was carrying a large number of cigarette packs in the passenger seat, and when asked about this fact, he responded that they were for himself to smoke,” he said.

The driver, car and evidence were taken to the sub-police station where the confiscated items were counted, establishing that the man from Mendoza was transporting 14,960 packets of the Pall Mall brand and the informal trade valuation was established for an amount of $52,360,000.

In addition, the money he was carrying was seized, detailed at 16,740 Argentine pesos, 6,100 Chilean pesos, 20 dollars and 10,000 Venezuelan bolivars, in addition to his cell phone.

By order of the prosecutor on duty for flagrante delicto, the cigarettes and the car were handed over to the National Customs Servicewhile the mobile equipment and money sent into custody to the Public ministry.

Captain Tamburrino added that the detainee had been hired to transport the cigarettes and that they were going to pay him a sum of money when he arrived in the city of Los Andes, which was his destination and where he had to meet another person to make delivery.
