Atesa: ESSMAR technical team reports complete normality in the operation of the Palangana landfill

After the inspection visit to the Palangana landfill facilities by a technical team from Essmar ESP, whose report was of total normality in its operation, especially in the leachate treatment process, it was corroborated that the versions that suggested leachate leaks through storm drains in neighborhoods near the landfill are not only false but reckless and irresponsible.

The team of experts from Essmar ESP was received by the engineers from the operational area of the landfill, with whom they toured each of the points where the different stages of the final disposal of the solid waste that are transported take place. to the place, verifying compliance with the established protocols and in accordance with the current regulatory framework for this type of operations.

“We were able to confirm and reassure the citizens that we do not have discharges through the perimeter and intermediate channels and there are no overflows in the leachate storage pool,” said Wilmer Ponce Deputy Manager of Operations and Other Services of Essmar ESP.

“The results of the visit by the Essmar ESP technical team confirm the commitment that we have maintained with the responsible management of solid waste, from the collection process, through transportation and final disposal, the latter being point, where we want to emphasize today, because the Palangana landfill is an area where we develop comprehensive management which includes processes to avoid soil degradation, management and control to avoid contamination of water sources, as well as daily coverage of the mass of waste, the control of drainage of percolated liquids and management of gas emissions,” said Yolanda Victoria González, strategic management leader at Atesa.

For his part, Edilfonso Orozco, president of the Citizen Oversight Office of the District of Santa Marta, confirmed that as a resident of the sector surrounding the Palangana landfill, the rumors about alleged leachate leaks in the runoff that pass through neighborhoods do not correspond to reality. such as Ondas del Caribe, Altos de Bahía Concha, Fundadores and Bastidas.

“This false information generates panic in the community because it is such a sensitive issue.

The truth is, I don’t know what they are looking for with these lying publications, because by verifying with the people who work at the landfill we were able to verify that the pools where the leachate is deposited are not full, a fact that leads us to send a call for peace of mind to all sectors. close to the landfill, since there is no spillage of leachate in any of the runoffs,” said the community leader.
