According to the latest report from the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam), the climatic situation in Colombia has generated multiple alerts at the national level. First of all, the island of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina is currently on orange alert due to adverse weather conditions, coinciding with the holiday season.

Ideam also extended the alert to other regions of the country: the Caribbean region is on yellow alert due to heavy rains in its western zone, while the Pacific region also faces an orange alert due to heavy rains, thunderstorms, winds and high waves that could affect coastal areas.

For its part, Ghisliane Echeverry Prieto, director of Ideam, explained that, “these conditions are a result of the rainy season and the transition towards the arrival of tropical cyclones to the Colombian coasts. In addition, she mentioned that the La Niña phenomenon, active since September, will intensify until the end of November, increasing the possibility of extreme weather events, including the formation of more tropical cyclones than usual this year.

The consequences of these climatic conditions are significant at the national level, with risks of landslides and flooding in multiple regions.

Currently, about 600 municipalities throughout the country are at some level of alert, of which 130 are on red alert, with Antioquia, Bolívar and Chocó being the most affected departments with the largest number of municipalities in this category.

Besides, A worrying hydrological situation is reported with 139 rivers on alert for possible flooding and sudden rises, particularly in the departments of Cauca and Magdalena in the Andean region, as well as the Pacific and Orinoquía regions.

Given this panorama, the authorities made an urgent call to the population to pay attention to the reports issued by risk entities and local authorities. It is crucial to follow prevention recommendations to avoid major emergencies.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management and Ideam continue to monitor the situation closely with the aim of protecting the lives and property of citizens against these adverse weather events.
