So far this year, the department of Antioquia has registered a 5.9% overall reduction in the number of homicides, with 41 fewer cases than in the same period of 2023, which, although it is a positive figure, It continues to worry because there are already 41 women and 615 men murdered in 2024.

There are six of the nine subregions that have seen a decrease in this crime:

  • Magdalena Medium (- 40.6%)
  • North (- 17.5%)
  • East (- 21.5%)
  • Southwest (- 6.2%)
  • Urabá (- 28.8%)
  • Aburrá Valley (- 14.9%)

“The southwest, the Uraba of Antioquia, including the Magdalena Medio, present an important reduction in such a way that the Antioquians can be sure that the Government of Antioquia, hand in hand with the Police and the Army, is doing a very important job to guarantee security and tranquility,” said the Secretary of Security, retired general Luis Eduardo Martínez.

Increase in homicides in three areas

The three subregions in which homicides have increased are Bajo Cauca (64%), the Northeast (52%) and the West (3.1%). In these areas, strong fighting between armed groups has been recorded, especially in municipalities such as Remedios where the most recent confrontation between the ELN and the Gulf Clan left 13 illegals dead.

“We have some very critical subregions in homicide, especially the Northeast and Bajo Cauca, but that must be understood from the point of view of illegal economies, illegal mining, drug trafficking, and the criminal income for which these criminal organizations fight. ”, explained the Secretary of Security.
