This institution, created in 1976, had its founding experience in the western province of Matanzas starting in June 1974.

With 30 municipalities and five regions, Matanzas was a relatively large province, so it was decided to start the experience there, recalled Ligio Barrero, who at 27 years old was one of its founders, on the Mesa Redonda radio and television program.

Barrero described it as a privilege for the people of Matanzas to inaugurate what he considered the purest expression of democracy.

For her part, Danay Rives, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) in the Matanzas municipality of Jovellanos, explained that the delegates carry out integrated community work that allows them to face the problems that affect the population.

They also control and supervise, through permanent work commissions, matters of an economic and social nature, with emphasis on food production, a priority task for that municipality, the province and the country.

He pointed out that this municipal body participates in intervention in vulnerable neighborhoods for their transformation, with the purpose of raising the standard of living of the population and assisting the most needy people, especially the elderly.

He pointed out that Jovellanos has more than 42 thousand readers, and a population of more than five thousand people, to whom he reports periodically on his work.

The governor of Matanzas, Marieta Poey, expressed on television, broadcast from TV Yumurí (local channel), that her province promotes a work system from the territories to grow in all economic indicators.

This has allowed several of its municipalities to present an economic surplus, and it is one of the three Cuban provinces with this characteristic.

He also noted that they seek to be self-sufficient in grains and work to increase the production of rice and other products such as meat, for which actions are being implemented.

With 470 deputies, the National Assembly of People’s Power is the supreme body of State power and represents the Legislative Power of the Republic of Cuba.

Their average age is 46 years, 19.79 percent are between 18 and 35 years old; 55.74 percent are women and 94.04 percent of the total have a university level.

According to the 2019 Constitution, the ANPP is responsible for the legislative and constituent powers of the nation.
