“He who allows himself to be painted passes”: Teachers denounce that students from the University of Chile force them to sign in to enter

Since mid-May, students at the University of Chile, specifically at the Juan Gómez Millas campus, have joined strikes in solidarity with the takeover of the Artes Center and the Palestinian cause.

In this context, teachers from the university opened a debate because since last week the students in occupation have authorized entry to the campus by marking them with paint.

“I find it incredible that the professors who want to enter our workplace at the University, The students in question, as a sign of authorization, paint a letter on our hand. Whats Next?”. This is what Rodrigo Medel, an academic and researcher at the Department of Ecological Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences, pointed out via the social network X.

In turn, Ricardo Brodsky, graduate in Literature and director of the Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna Museum, responded to the publication: “He who dances passes, he who lets his hand be painted passes. It is the same violence, the desire to forcefully impose your will on others, without considering their dignity.”.

The student centers on campus have indicated on social networks who can enter the campus: students who have a Smart University Card (TUI) or National Student Card (TNE); academics with research and their thesis students; and officials.

According to information provided to La Tercera, In order to enter the campus, your hand must be scratched with an initial corresponding to the natural status of the person entering, that is, if he or she is a student, official, or academic. In the last of these cases, only academics who are carrying out research can enter, which must be proven to be ongoing. Both to enter and leave, the students escort the academic during their stay on campus.

Regarding the shot, The Faculty of Sciences disagreed in light of the events that occurred during these days at the headquarters: “The TAKEOVER of our facilities will never be a valid or recognized mobilization in our community, a position that is supported by the entire structure of the University of Chile from the Central House and the councils of Undergraduate Directors. “This is a space that belongs to all three of us, but in particular there are those of us who have built it with effort and work over many years.”

When consulting with the Juan Gómez Millas student centers regarding this measure to enter the campus, they told the media that they cannot provide information in this regard due to security issues. QOn the part of different faculties at the headquarters they have threatened to take legal action against the students regarding the strike.

“It should be noted that these authorities have ensured to demobilize and conflict with the students, threatening them with legal and/or academic reprisals, resulting in systematic persecution of the mobilized students. and, even worse, with their representatives, as is evident in their statement,” the student center said in a statement today.

Within the framework of the mobilizations at the University of Chile, students have paralyzed academic activities in various ways. One of them was camping in the Central House. One of the demands expressed was to end the study house’s agreements with Israeli universities. This weekend, students also protested against the rector Rosa Devés, raising a canvas alluding to the conflict in Gaza.
