Last June 9 were the municipal primaries, and although there was low participation, Some candidates were determined to compete for the mayor’s seat in the next general elections.

Precisely, this October 27th municipal elections will be voted in Chile, in addition to pay for new cores, councilors and regional governors. These votes are mandatory, unlike the last primaries.

For this reason, there is special attention to councilors who have occupied the municipal seat for years and now cannot be re-elected. There will be 69 of the 345 municipalities that will have a new mayor.

The reason for this is because according to the Law 21,238the position of head of the municipality can only last for one maximum of three consecutive periods (12 years).

Which mayors will not be able to run for re-election?

Looking ahead to municipal elections on October 27 in Chilethere are classic names in the Metropolitan Region that they will not be able to reapply to the mayor’s office. These are the following:

  • Daniel Jadue (PC): Recoleta (during his preventive detention for the Farmacias Populares Case he has not been able to practice).
  • Germán Codina (RN): High Bridge.
  • Rodolfo Carter (IND): Florida.
  • Felipe Delpin (DC): The farm.
  • Carolina Leitao (DC): Peñalolén.
  • Gonzalo Durán (CS): Independence.
  • Carlos Cuadrado (PPD): Huechuraba.
  • Juan Pablo Barros (IND): Curacaví.
  • Francisco Gomez (PS): The mountain.
  • Roberto Torres (Independent): Alhué.

For these municipal elections, a group of parliamentarians led by senator Manuel José Ossandón (RN), They look for changes in the process. And one of them is do the voting in two days.

On the other hand, it is also sought that at least one of these days is not an inalienable holiday, with the idea that all commerce can function, as well as remove the so-called “Prohibition Law”which restricts the sale of alcohol for that commercial sector.

All this must be approved in Congress and thus become official later.
