Government, Army and Police reaffirm maintaining the offensive against criminals in the Sierra Nevada to guarantee security and public order in Santa Marta and Magdalena

At the end of the extraordinary security council convened by Governor Martínez, millionaire rewards were announced to find the location and capture of the most wanted criminals of Los Pachencas and the Clan del Golfo. The president referred to the instrumentalization and threats of armed groups to merchants, farmers, indigenous people and social leaders, to participate in an alleged protest.

“We are going to continue on the offensive, there is no rest for operational and intelligence actions to combat crime in the territory,” the governor, Rafael Martínez, reaffirmed forcefully and clearly his position of confronting it together with the Army and the National Police to narco-paramilitary organizations that commit crimes in the Department, after the closure of a Security Council held in the Government in order to guarantee public order in the rural area of Santa Marta and Magdalena.

What was said by the departmental leader is due to the supposed civic strike in which several communities residing around the Troncal del Caribe were mobilized, at the height of the township of Guachaca, rural area of Santa Marta, who would have gone to the roads in fact for the threats and harassment of merchants, peasants, indigenous people and social leaders. The president pointed out that the flags of peace cannot be used when underlying reasons of war and crime.

“We received information that the strike was not so ‘civil’ because groups outside the Law were putting pressure on the citizens from the Sierra. We respect the population’s right to protest and peaceful demonstration, but there cannot be any impact on the general interest. We believe in peace agreements and a negotiated solution to the conflict. It is not true that we are against peace, I understand that initially Los Pachencas were on a list for agreements with the central government, but that today they are not precisely because they themselves did not stop committing crimes,” said the governor.

Martínez also indicated that “we know the territory and the population, therefore, there is no room for misunderstanding that not all of the demonstration was voluntary. Some came down for fear of reprisals from the criminal organizations that are in the territory, therefore, we are going to continue on the offensive.”

Likewise, the Magdalen executive stated that he also received information that shows that the organizations that commit crimes in the Troncal have increased their actions towards the urban area, since the closed business of more than 30 neighborhoods shows unprecedented territorial control. Furthermore, he indicated with astonishment how officials from the district mayor’s office are spokespersons for these criminal organizations: “Time will prove us right,” he added.
