From 9 a.m., provincial leaders of the sector meet with a national delegation. The distribution of the Special Tobacco Fund (FET) among the main topics to be discussed.

The meeting was convened with the participation of the Secretary of Planning and Management of the Nation, Juan Pazos. Since 9 o’clock, they have been meeting at the América Cultural Center.

The ministers of the productive portfolios of the tobacco provinces are expected to participate, and it is expected that the representatives will approach and synthesize positions regarding dialogue with the Nation.

Starting at 11, there will be a technical meeting to address the distribution of the FET and the transfers made to the provinces.

The Secretary of Agricultural Development, Milagros Patron Costashe detailed to the program Hour of Voices (FM Ya 91.3) that one of the points to be addressed is the ways in which the items reach the producers.

The FET discussion

The FET is a fund that is made up of taxes collected from the sale of cigarettes and paid by tobacco companies.

Recently, a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation gave the green light to a claim by the producers.

It was intended that the national cigarette companies, headed by the businessman Pablo Oterowill begin to pay taxes under the same conditions as multinationals.

In the case of the provinces, the FET amounts are distributed in 80% that are credited directly to the producers. The remaining 20% is downloaded through programs.

The sector’s working groups seek to advance proposals that modify the way in which that 20% reaches producers. Usually, this percentage is used for pension payments to employees in the sector.

“It is one of the issues we have to discuss today. The 20% in recent times has had to do with strengthening everything that is part of the assistance payment,” said Patrón Costas.
