La Rioja rejects a bilateral financing agreement in Catalonia

Logroño (EFE).- The spokesperson for the Government of La Rioja, Alfonso Domínguez, rejected this Thursday a bilateral agreement with Catalonia that provides “unique” financing, which would mean “a privilege” for this community and “a detriment” for the Riojans.

In statements to journalists, he referred to the first vice president and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, who said that the Government wants to promote a “global reform” of the regional financing model that, at the same time, addresses the “singularities” of certain territories, such as Catalonia.

Domínguez has stressed that La Rioja “will try to prevent” financing that would mean giving up 15,000 million euros for a single autonomous community, because it “breaks” two of the most basic constitutional principles, which are those of equality and solidarity between all regions.

300 million for La Rioja

The Minister of Finance has also criticized that this would mean transferring resources from the least prosperous regions to the most prosperous autonomies, such as Catalonia.

“In a context in which deliveries to accounts of the financing system have not yet been updated and the State has to transfer 300 million euros to La Rioja this year alone, we find ourselves with this privilege,” he added.

For this reason, he has insisted that “what is needed is a new financing system for all autonomous communities, based on the principles of equality and interterritorial solidarity”, which allows having the same financing for public services in all places. Spain.

All communities

He explained that, after Montero’s statements, the Treasury councilors of all the autonomous communities have already been in contact, “from various political parties and not just the PP, to see what type of joint actions” they can carry out.

In this sense, it has been urged that the Conference of Presidents be convened immediately, in which all the autonomies have to address financing with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, since it is something that “affects all Spaniards and not only “It must be addressed in bilateral actions.”

He has also requested that the Fiscal and Financial Policy Council (CPFF) meet and has not ruled out “taking more steps when the time comes.”
