The CAR reported the removal of more than 3.5 million cubic meters of plant material and sediments.

  • More than 960 thousand square meters of the ecosystem have been intervened.

Bogotá, DC, June 9, 2024.

In a tour of the Laguna de La Herrera wetland, located in the municipality of Mosquera, the director of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR), Alfred Ballesteros, highlighted the 90 percent progress in the environmental recovery work of this ecosystem , which was filled with sediment and aquatic weeds.

To date, around 3.5 million cubic meters of invasive vegetation and sediments have been removed, in an area of more than 960 thousand square meters.

“There will be a next phase through which we will carry out ecosystem recovery actions: protection of fauna and flora, in four natural islands that have been conserved here to protect them,” explained Alfred Ballesteros, general director of the CAR.

La Herrera is a key ecosystem where various species of fauna and flora converge, located in the Balsillas village belonging to the Bojacá River basin.

“La Laguna de La Herrera is one of the most important in Cundinamarca and the CAR territory, which unfortunately had been abandoned for years,” added the CAR director.

There are four work fronts in which, with land and aquatic machinery, the removal of material is carried out, which is used in the restoration of soils to help improve their fertility.

These tasks are part of the development of strategic line number 1 of the CAR Action Plan: the Comprehensive management of biodiversity and its ecosystem services, in which one of its objectives is to improve the hydraulic capacity of the territory’s water bodies.
