Join efforts and address the environmental and risk management recommendations issued in May 2022, with the aim of finding definitive solutions to the problems derived from rising and flooding in the middle and lower basins of the Sinú River, is the request made in the last hours the Ombudsman’s Office

This call arises as a result of the Red Alert decreed by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Sinú and San Jorge Valleys (CVS) for these areas.

The heavy rainfall recorded in recent weeks has caused a significant increase in the flows of the Sinú and San Jorge rivers, which has increased threats for municipalities such as Tierralta, San Pelayo and Montería.

Likewise, towns such as Montelíbano, Ayapel, La Apartada and Puerto Libertador have already reported flooding.

In the municipality of Lorica, the Disaster Risk Management Council, recently convened by the Mayor’s Office, issued a favorable concept to declare a public calamity due to the winter wave that is hitting them.

Likewise, the support of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), the Government of Córdoba and the CVS, among other entities, was requested.

The Ombudsman’s Office, through a report issued more than two years ago, urged national, regional and local actors to take the necessary measures to guarantee or restore the rights of communities in municipalities at risk or affected by floods and other related events. The competent authorities, from their respective jurisdictions and with a comprehensive and collaborative approach, must implement the actions, preparation plans and required works, in accordance with the National Policy for Risk Management (Law 1523 of 2012).
