The province of Holguín commemorates this June 13 the International Day of awareness towards people with the condition of albinism, becoming the national headquarters of this community – called Piel de Coral – with important work and achievements despite the short time it has been founded. since March 2023.

One of its founders, the Master of Science Iliana Pupo Herrera, explained to Radio Angulo Digital that they continue to grow and have established subsidiaries in the provinces of Las Tunas and Santiago de Cuba.

He added that the celebrations revolve around the theme: “Ten years of International Albinism Awareness Day: A decade of collective progress.”

Likewise, he noted that “this day is celebrated around the world to publicize the progress made within the albinism movement in recent years, as a renewed commitment for the future, to highlight the tireless efforts and reflect on the continuous legal changes, political and practical measures that are still necessary to guarantee the full and equal enjoyment of the rights of people with this condition.

“Our history goes back more than 20 years and a little more than a year since the community was founded, but we really celebrate the 10 years of existence before the UN of a representative for the rights of people with the condition of albinism,” he noted.

He said that “Cuba, unlike all the countries in the world, even world and international groups, has a song that is representing us both at the country level and at the world level, which is written by Dr. Frank Fernández Nieto, who He is the albino leader of Santiago de Cuba. It is titled Fiesta in Cuba. It is a very Cuban conga with very suggestive lyrics.”

Having a comprehensive consultation of specialties demanded by those living with this condition is one of the most important steps taken, a proposal that is progressively generalized to the rest of the country, according to the sociologist, “seven other provinces have their multidisciplinary consultations that “They carry out health actions to date.”

As a novelty, a meeting took place for the first time in the morning between representatives of the Foundation, simply friends of Argentina, and members of the National Board of Directors, at the International Sun Clinic in Varadero.

The Community of People with the Condition of Albinism has grown to reach 756 members so far throughout Cuba, with the goal of reaching a thousand with the work of the Casa de Iberoamérica and the Retinitis Pigmentosa Center, as national headquarters.

In this way, in the different remaining provinces of the country, work is being done to identify this population for the creation of future branches because although progress has been made in the social acceptance of albino people, many of them still suffer discrimination and prejudice.

This celebration arises from the resolution adopted in December 2014 by the UN General Assembly, where as of 2015 the International Albinism Awareness Day has been proclaimed. This is due to the emergence of the “Global Alliance of Albinism” (AGA) and the “Latin American Union of Albinism” (ULA) and the consolidation of corporations, foundations and groups to which Cuba joined with the creation of the Piel de Coral.
