The Colombian government announced that the country will receive injured Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip, along with their families, to provide them with medical care. The announcement was made by Elizabeth Taylor Jay, Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs, after a meeting with President Gustavo Petro in Stockholm, within the framework of the president’s state visit to Sweden.

According to the vice minister’s statements, the children will be treated at the Military Hospital in Colombia. At the moment, it is not known how many people will be treated or how and when they will enter the country.

The Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo, previously stated that Colombia financially supported the work of the UN Mission in Palestine (UNRWA) and participated in the designed a humanitarian assistance program to care for children and women affected by the fighting. Murillo’s statements were given within the framework of a conference in Amman, Jordan. The meeting held with other heads of state and ministers took place on June 11, with the purpose of coordinating multilateral actions to protect the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

The Government of Gustavo Petro has assumed several positions in repudiation of the Israeli Government’s response to the terrorist attacks perpetrated by the Hamas terrorist group on October 7, 2023. Among the Government’s actions has been support for the process initiated by South Africa against Israel before the ICJ and the breaking of diplomatic relations with Israel. Recently, it was also announced that coal exports to Israel would stop.

Currently Colombia has supported resolution 2735, which seeks to effect a ceasefire in Gaza through a three-phase plan. The resolution, approved by the UN Security Council on June 10, was proposed by the United States.
