Miami, June 14 (EFE).- The US Southern Command reported the presence of its war submarine in Guantánamo Bay (Cuba) as part of its “routine” tasks, in the middle of the visit to Havana of a Russian Navy flotilla, which includes a nuclear-powered submarine.

Southcom, which oversees US military operations in Latin America and the Caribbean, said Thursday that the fast attack submarine USS Helena is in Guantanamo Bay “as part of a routine port visit.”

He also clarified that “the location and transit of the ship were previously planned.”

This week the United States Government has said that the Russian flotilla does not pose a threat to American national security.

“We will always and constantly monitor any foreign vessel operating near US territorial waters. We obviously take this seriously, but these exercises do not pose a threat to the United States,” said Pentagon deputy spokesperson Sabrina Singh.

The Russian flotilla includes a modern frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine. EFE
