The group was welcomed by the Secretary of Culture of the Province, Fabián Reato, who expressed satisfaction that the institution is part of such an interesting and formative activity, which is fundamental since it consists of “learning to put into practice words knowledge.” And he added: “We know that it is the basis of education and the transmission of knowledge. We are available and I invite you to continue visiting the Archive.”

In turn, Mara Petitti, a representative of the Institute of Social Studies, highlighted the importance of research and the development of critical thinking. “It is very interesting to pursue a university degree thinking that research is a possible outlet that one can dedicate oneself to. “It is a possible professional possibility,” she noted, referring to the group’s last stage in high school.

In addition, professionals from the UNER and the National University of La Plata participated together with the archivist Milagros Rodríguez, from the provincial organization. The Archive worker gave a review of the Culture institution and referred to the role of the institution in the project, which is to facilitate the different funds that make up the collection, detail the different sources and the care that must be taken before the manipulation of documentary heritage.

Carlos Iriarte, general director of Museums and Cultural Heritage, in whose area the Archive operates, and Natalia Prado, general director of Sociocultural Programs, were present at the Ministry of Culture.

Development and experiences

During the day, the young people dedicated themselves fully to group workshop work. First they participated in an exhibition moment and then they were able to have contact with the organization’s newspaper archive. At different times, they addressed the use of sources in research and dynamics.

“I didn’t know about the archive and now that I’m here, I find it very interesting. We were involved in the sports area and it is related to the volleyball teams in the neighborhood clubs. We will work on how social problems affect the environment in which we develop. We are starting to address the investigation, the steps, the observations, the objectives, the hypotheses,” Maitena said about her experience. Angelina and Victoria, other of the students, said that it was the first time they had visited the Archive and that they had been “very interested” in the exercise based on triggering questions such as What happened the year they were born?, details that they went to look for in newspapers of the time. They finished the first day of the workshop with specific searches such as news about the soccer World Cup (1978 and 1986). To close the activity, students and teachers held a plenary session with comments.
