With the purpose of strengthening the execution of the memorandum of understanding signed in October 2023 between the Intergovernmental Authority for the Development of East Africa (IGAD) and the State of Chile, represented by the General Directorate of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (Directemar) , IGAD officials visited said Directorate and the Punta Ángeles Lighthouse Complex in Valparaíso.

The foreign delegation had the opportunity to learn about the capabilities of the Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA), the Directorate of Maritime Security and Operations (Dirsomar) and the Directorate of Maritime Interests and Aquatic Environment (Dirinmar).

During their stay in Chile, representatives of the IGAD Security Sector also held meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrel) and other key actors in the maritime sector, in order to establish strategic partnerships and share points of view to promote cooperation. south-south international maritime

The fundamental objective was to leverage the combined strengths and resources of IGAD and Chile to address shared maritime concerns and threats, such as piracy, maritime smuggling and illegal fishing, ensuring compliance with international laws and regulations to protect respective maritime interests.
