The Federal Public Revenue Administration (AFIP) reinforces its control actions to combat informal work in the rural sector. The organization led by Florencia Misrahi, through the General Directorate of Social Security Resources, carried out another operation on a field in Salta dedicated to the exploitation of citrus fruits and detected severe irregularities in the working and living conditions of the employees.

As reported on the official site Argentina.gob.ar, 64 workers dedicated to the lemon harvest were identified in the procedure, of which 62 were not registered. During the inspection of the farm, located in the Salta town of Río Piedras, it was found that the working hours extended from Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Another of the sectors that the workers shared.

Weekly salaries did not exceed $40,000, that is, they were below the minimum, vital and mobile amount established by law. Furthermore, their employers “deducted” $2,500 per day for the food they consumed, and they also did not charge them on rainy days or when the plants were not suitable for harvesting, because they could not perform their tasks.

In this sense, the employers did not provide them with work clothes or protective elements. The owners of the field themselves were the ones who transported the workers there, and housed them in a hotel under construction without adequate conditions, since it lacked a bathroom or drinking water.

Tax complaint

The official site reported that the severe irregularities shown by the revealed conditions led to the filing of a criminal complaint before the Federal Fiscal Unit of Salta for indications of human trafficking for labor exploitation purposes. The judicial authorities and the AFIP will continue to investigate to ensure the protection of workers and determine the corresponding responsibilities.

This operation occurs within the framework of the AFIP’s permanent actions against labor exploitation in the rural sector and is the result of joint work between the different government authorities to guarantee respect for the labor rights of all workers.

“The AFIP has the toll-free hotline 0800-999-3368 (option 3) to report signs of labor trafficking, reduction to servitude, child labor and hiring of irregular migrants, and the email [email protected]. The complaint can be anonymous,” the organization highlighted.
