The victory, with goals from Jhon Arias, Jhon Córdoba and Luis Díaz, maintains the undefeated record of the Néstor Lorenzo era (20 games) and extends the National Team’s streak to 23 games without losing. The last defeat was on February 1, 2022, 1-0 against Argentina at the Monumental de Núñez.
Colombia’s new brand: for the first time win eight online games
However, in addition to being undefeated, Colombia’s victory allows it to achieve an unprecedented feat: it is the first time that the National Team has won eight consecutive games.
The series began on November 16, 2023, with the historic 2-1 victory against Brazil, the first in the entire history of the tie. Five days later, they beat Paraguay 0-1 in Asunción.
On the Fifa date in December, the National Team’s alternate roster won its two games: 1-0 against Venezuela and 3-2 against Mexico. And then, the two games in March of this year also ended in victories: 1-0 against Spain and 3-2 against Romania. The streak is completed with the two wins against the United States and Bolivia. Colombia had won seven games in a row on three occasions
Colombia’s record was seven victories, something it had achieved three times. The first, between August 7, 1988 and July 3, 1989, with Francisco Maturana as coach.
There were six victories in friendlies (2-1 against Uruguay, 1-0 against Peru, 1-0 against Chile, 1-0 against Argentina, 1-0 against the United States and 4-0 against Haiti) and one in the Copa América (4 -2 to Venezuela). It was lost on July 5, 1989, against Paraguay (1-0).
In 2001, also with Maturana, Colombia once again won seven consecutive games: the six of the Copa América in which the team was crowned champion (2-0 to Venezuela, 1-0 to Ecuador, 2-0 to Chile, 3- 0 to Peru, 2-0 to Honduras and 1-0 to Mexico) and a friendly (2-1 to Liberia). The streak was broken on August 16, with a 0-1 loss against Peru in the qualifying round.
The last time Colombia had achieved seven victories in a row was in the friendlies prior to the 2015 Copa América, with José Pékerman as coach: 3-0 to El Salvador, 1-0 to Canada, 2-1 to the United States, 1 -0 to Slovenia, 6-0 to Bahrain, 3-1 to Kuwait and 1-0 to Costa Rica. The defeat came at the worst moment: 1-0 against Venezuela, in the debut in the continental tournament.
