Córdoba, (EFE).- A 16th century guild cup, dedicated in Córdoba to Catholic worship between 1873 and 1969, will be exhibited in an exhibition at the National Museum of Nuremberg (Germany). The piece is probably originally from that city.

The cup dates from around 1540 in silver gilt with enamel. It has small silver applications in its color. The transfer to the German art gallery will be made for the temporary exhibition ‘Nürnberg Global 1300-1600’. The exhibition will take place between September 24, 2025 and March 22, 2026.

The piece features the Nuremberg mark. It refers to the German region. There, in the 16th century, there was a great focus dedicated to goldsmithing. This has been reported by the Provincial Council of Córdoba, owner of the goldsmith’s piece.

The one known as the ‘Nuremberg Cup’, a city with which Córdoba has been twinned since 2010, is one of the most valuable and important pieces of goldsmithing in the artistic collection of the Provincial Council of Córdoba.

From Jaén

It has a height of 45 centimeters, 15 in diameter at the base and 19 in diameter at the mouth. The cup was able to reach Córdoba from the Jaén Cathedral. There it would be in the hands of Maximilian of Austria. This is what the studies of the art historian Mercedes Valverde point out.

It would remain in Jaén until 1873. Then, it was sold to a resident of Córdoba, Gabriel Lanuza. Victoriano Rivera y Romero saw her in his silver shop. In this way, he gave it to the Provincial Council for the same price that it cost him. It was 27 reais per ounce of weight. The condition was that it be destined for a museum.

Despite this, the corporation deposited it to be used for Catholic worship in the chapel of the Hospital del Cardenal Salazar. It remained in this center until its closure for installation in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters building.

The president of the Provincial Council of Córdoba, Salvador Fuentes, and the second vice president and delegate of the Interior Government, Marta Siles, held a meeting with the curator of the exhibition, Sven Jakstat, to specify the details of the transfer.
