The number of street traders in the Santa Cruz capital grew from 20,000 to 37,000 between 2021 and 2024 product of unemployment, as revealed by the mayor of Santa Cruz, Jhonny Fernández during an interview on the program ¡Qué Semana!, on EL DEBER Radio.

The mayor recognized that there are many fronts to continue working in the city, among them urban planning, since the management faces problems with the occupation of public spaces by informal merchants. According to Fernández, after the pandemic, informality grew in Santa Cruz de la Sierra due to the lack of formal jobs.

He pointed out that when he took office as mayor, in 2021, he conducted a survey and the number of Street vendors used to number 20,000 and now there are 37,000. “We have to deal with this problem, but we also have to take into account that, if people go out to the streets to sell, it is not to harm the citizens, but because they want to eat and live. So, this phenomenon must be covered with local and national policies, as well as incentives for people to have formal jobs,” he indicated.

On the other hand, Fernández, leader of Unidad Cívica Solidaridad (UCS), He assured that they are already in the race to take part in the 2025 presidential elections, and are working on the political structuring of the party and the government plan. He points out that they will reach the Government.

“I am sure that we are going to be a national government, remember. Save this note. I am very sure. First, we have acronyms and that is something very important. There are many pre-candidates who talk about being candidates on a national scale and they don’t have an acronym, I don’t know how they are going to do it. Second, we have structure and we are strengthening it. Third, we are developing a Government plan, but one that the country needs. Fourth, then we are going to select the pre-candidates that this year we have to select for deputies and senators, and there we will see if we go alone or go in alliance,” he indicated.
