A new edition of the Digital News Report (DNR24) study, carried out by the Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford, recognized Bío Bío as the most reliable media in our country, based on a survey of Chilean users.

The research commissioned by the British consulting firm YouGov consulted 2,026 Chileans, ensuring that the sample was nationally representative, in terms of age, sex and residence.

In the study, 64% of those surveyed identified Bío Bío as a medium in which they trust, being the highest score. In second place was CNN Chile with 63% and then Cooperativa with 61%.

Unfortunately, general trust in the Chilean media continues on a downward trend, falling to a historic 32%, three points less than last year and 15 points below the beginning of the measurement in 2017.

“This situation is linked to the context of political polarization and periodic elections, some of which offer binary options that tend to divide the country between right-wing and left-wing alternatives,” comments the report.

In addition to the growing political polarization in Chile, Digital News Report indicates that there are “tense relations between the press and the government.”

Likewise, they point out that “news consumption has decreased in all sources since 2017; Television and printed newspapers have recorded the biggest declines. This year, the consumption of information on social networks such as Facebook and X has also decreased significantly.”

Meanwhile, the number of Chileans willing to pay for news rose one point since last year, reaching 12% in 2024, showing that a still small, but growing number of people consider it valuable to receive specialized news.

On the other hand, according to the Digital News Report 2024, “news consumption on television increased slightly, perhaps due to the deployment of current affairs reporters in support of their sports colleagues to cover the Pan American Games organized this year by Chile.”

BioBioChile remains the most viewed digital media in Chile according to Similarweb

The results of the Digital News Report are consistent with the ranking of Chilean media by the international data analysis consultancy Similarweb, whose list is headed in May by BioBioChile with 35.2 million visits as the most visited media in our country; followed by La Tercera with 23 million; and Emol with 21.8 million visits.
