What happened?
Over the weekend, a video was spread on social media showing a woman being hit by a train in the city of Arica, while walking through a free fair installed on the railway line.
The images caused a stir not only because of the accident, but also because of the location of the fair, which resembles other existing markets in Asian countries that are known for being positioned next to railway tracks.

Woman did not want to receive medical attention
According to what was reported by Carabineros, the incident occurred last Saturday, June 15, around 10:00 a.m., meters from the intersection of Robinsón Rojas and Yerbas Buenas streets.
The train was heading to the town of Poconchile when the accident occurred and the victim corresponds to a older adult.
The woman was left with a blow to the right elbow and did not want to be attended to, leaving the place before the Samu’s arrival.
Mayor questioned the installation of the fair
“Here the responsibility is shared, we as a municipality also assume part of the role of increasing inspection, however, it is complex for us,” declared the mayor of Arica, Gerardo Espindolaaccording to Emol.
According to the communal chief, the controls do not solve the problem definitively: “We already removed a fair from the sector, we took it to another space, and others were immediately set up.”
“We have issued fines, we have inspected, but we cannot have municipal inspectors in that place 24 hours a day, every day, nor ask Carabineros to be in that space every day,” he added.
