On September 13, Córdoba will host the delivery of the 3rd Technical Architecture Awards for performances in World Heritage Cities, awards for which seven finalists have already been selected. In addition to representing a commitment and vindication in the work of maintenance and care of historical heritage in general, these distinctions want to highlight the good practices and work of technical architecture professionals who are dedicated to this activity.

As indicated by the organization of the awards in a note, on May 24 the deadline for submitting works to the III Technical Architecture Awards in World Heritage cities, convened by the Association of Official Colleges of Architecture, ended on May 24. Technical Architecture in these cities declared World Heritage by UNESCO, the General Council of Technical Architecture of Spain (Cgate) with the collaboration of the Spanish National Committee of Icomos, International Council of Monuments and Sites, an advisory body to UNESCO.

After the success of the first two editions held in 2018 and 2022, respectively, this third edition has seven works aspiring to be chosen as the best intervention in cities that have a historical heritage recognized by UNESCO: Alcalá de Henares (Madrid ), Ávila, Baeza and Úbeda (Jaén), Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza, Mérida (Badajoz), Salamanca, San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife), Santiago de Compostela (A Coruña), Segovia, Tarragona and Toledo.

For the president of the Association and coordinator of the contest, Diego Salas, member of the Cgate Executive Commission and president of the College of Technical Architects of Cáceres, “our historical heritage is of such scope that it is everyone’s responsibility to care for and protect it.”

“From technical architecture we want to contribute by rewarding the best professional performances in the field of maintenance and conservation, as well as the rehabilitation and restoration of historical buildings in these cities declared World Heritage,” said Salas.

To qualify for these awards it has been necessary that at least one of the members of each professional team be registered and that the intervention has taken place between January 2020 and May 2024. Now it will be the responsibility of the jury, made up of representatives of the Association of Official Colleges of Technical Architecture in World Heritage Cities, Cgate and public entities, companies and associations related to built heritage, select the winners of this call.

The presentation of the first edition of these awards was held in Cáceres and the main award went to Pedro Javier Fernández Quevedo for his work ‘Rehabilitation and Conservation of the Old Butcher Shops and Clock Tower for tourist use in Úbeda’. In 2022, the award ceremony took place in Toledo and the work carried out by Ana Castro Alonso for the ‘Completion of the covers of the head of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela’ was recognized with the first prize.

“With this third edition, we are consolidating these awards that, in addition to promoting the care and maintenance of our historical heritage, are a recognition for all technical architects who carry out their activity in this sector. Thanks to their dedication and innovation in their work With initiatives, ideas and technical solutions we will be able to enjoy these historic buildings for many more centuries,” concluded Diego Salas.
