The United Nations Office for Human Rights in Colombia expressed his concern about the levels of violence that are being experienced in different parts of the country, after the attack suffered by Sigifredo Márquez, father of Vice President Francia Márquez and different criminal acts committed by dissidents.
“We are very concerned about the level of violence experienced by the population in Colombia, including yesterday’s attack against the vice president’s father; two attacks last week in Jamundí, Valle del Cauca, that left several people injured; the attacks on police stations in Suárez and Cajibío, in Cauca, which affected homes and the health of a baby in a hospital; the fighting among the civilian population in Madrigal -Policarpa- Nariño,” he said Juliette de Rivero, head of the office for Colombia.

Likewise, they pointed out their deep concern about the significant territorial expansion of armed groups and the strategies of social control over the population in various parts of the country; For this they asked the Government to take actions that allow the return of tranquility to the communities that are being affected.
“The State as a whole, civil and military authorities, must work to recover governability and protect human rights. This can be achieved by implementing the human security policy, adopted by the Government and which must be developed at all levels, civil and military, and accompanied by the policy of dismantling crime”stated De Rivero.
In this statement in which they also urged armed groups to respect the rights of the civilian population, the United Nations stressed that dialogues with different armed groups must have as their objective “the protection of the civilian population, strengthening the comprehensive presence of the State.”
