The footwear industry in Cúcuta is going through one of the most critical moments in its recent history, with a significant drop in sales that threatens the stability of hundreds of micro and small businesses.

Óscar Herrera is one of these businessmen and told Caracol Radio that “commerce in Cúcuta has been in the situation presented by the downturn in the economy at the national level. I believe that there are many factors that affect the lack of cash flow or purchasing capacity of the end customer, which has affected the productivity of each company.”

He highlighted that the economy in general has had a 50% collapse and companies are looking for strategies to be able to sustain themselves.

He indicated that “we have participated in macro-rounds, fairs and all types of events that allow us to improve our product to be able to generate orders and production, sales and sustain the team we have.”

Various factors have contributed to this crisis. First, unfair competition from low-cost imported products has severely affected local manufacturers. Added to this is the decrease in consumer purchasing power. Inflation and the increase in the cost of living have led many families to prioritize their expenses on basic necessities, leaving aside the purchase of footwear.

Footwear production has historically been one of the economic pillars of Cúcuta, generating thousands of jobs and contributing to local development. However, the decline in sales has caused many companies to reduce their production or even close their doors.

Faced with this situation, the union has requested the municipal and national administration to implement support measures. Despite the challenges, some entrepreneurs remain optimistic and seek to innovate to survive.
