Alert for increase in dengue in Cundinamarca. These are the municipalities with the most cases!

The Cundinamarca Health Secretariat, through the Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sivigila), revealed that in the days since 2024, 7,508 cases of dengue have been reported in the department.

This figure, known by the newspaper El Tiempo, alerted local authorities due to the time of year, given the massive departure of passengers this holiday season.

The ten municipalities with the highest number of cases

  1. Fusagasugá, with 1,649
  2. The Table, with 922
  3. The College, with 478
  4. La Vega, with 432
  5. Cachipay, with 294
  6. Villeta, with 332
  7. Girardot, with 321
  8. Anapoima, with 278
  9. Viota, with 254

Health authorities of Cundinamarca reported that, throughout the year, the department has maintained the status of a dengue outbreak, although they have managed to control the lethality. According to the Government of Cundinamarca, this region is not immune to the dengue trend in America and Colombia, facing an unexpected increase due to the El Niño phenomenon.

“The proportion of severe dengue is equivalent to 0.53 percent of the total cases reported until epidemiological week number 22 of 2024,” confirmed the Mayor’s Office.

According to figures from the National Institute of Health (INS) as of May 2024, approximately 8,800 people could be infected with the dengue virus in Cundinamarca. Given this increase in suspected cases, the Attorney General’s Office requested information from the Department’s Health Secretariat, thus fulfilling its preventive function.

The Public Ministry stressed that, although the National Institute of Health has been monitoring the situation, it must receive the maximum attention of the institute.

Likewise, the control entity emphasized the need to prioritize the reduction of infections and ensure an adequate health care process by the authorities in Cundinamarca. For this reason, active surveillance will be maintained from the Regional.

The atypical behavior of the climate, with a prolonged dry season followed by intermittent rains, altered the epidemiological projections of dengue cases throughout America. This outbreak has become the strongest recorded on the continent, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Dengue can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, and minor bleeding such as gum or nosebleeds. In its most severe forms, it can lead to serious complications, such as severe or hemorrhagic dengue, which can cause damage to blood vessels, a decrease in the number of platelets and possible internal bleeding.
