Medellin, Antioquia

The increase in complaints of extortion in the department has been 14%, which represents 45 more cases who have been attended to by the authorities in different subregions, especially in Magdalena Medio, the east and north of Antioquia, where various modalities of this crime are recorded.

One of the criminal structures that extorts the most is the Clan del Golfo, that in municipalities such as Yarumal, Santa Rosa, Donmatías, Abejorral and Santuario they charged ranchers, coffee growers and merchants between 500 thousand and 40 million pesos to let them work.

The commander of the Antioquia Police, Colonel Carlos Martínez, highlighted the importance of reporting these cases.

“Because the success rate of these complaints is over 85%. That people report, that people break the fear of indicating what is happening to the Prosecutor’s Office, Police or Military Gaula authorities is very important.”

On the other hand, in an operation in the Porcesito de Donmatías district, they also identified a group of people who were extorting a man, demanding 15 million pesos in the name of the ELN.

The Police Commander indicated that although extortion is not a new crime and has no justification, it is important to prevent it and avoid giving very personal information through social networks.

“You have to make appropriate use of social networks, because people post, post or publish a large part of their life, their routine. If the criminal stops to analyze, links to other open sources of information, he suddenly determines workplaces, sites, vehicle license plates. Sometimes, let’s say the environment, the publications of photos or videos, are not taken into account and that feeds the criminal’s ability to deal with information,” said Colonel Martínez.

The Antioquia Police also confirmed that so far this year, 6 people have been captured for kidnappings, which in most cases are kidnappings for extortion.
