Seven municipalities in the department of Córdoba have declared a public calamity due to the intense rainy season affecting the region. The most recent declaration came from Cereté, where rainfall has caused flooding in several sectors, and Tierralta, where rising ravines and streams are putting several communities at risk.

The municipality of Ayapel is one of the most affected, with serious damage caused by the overflowing of the Cara de Gato dam, flooding large rural areas and harming numerous families and crops. The situation in Ayapel highlights the urgency of emergency measures to mitigate the effects of the rains in the region.

The department’s capital, Montería, has also declared a public calamity to manage emergencies in its rural areas, where overflowing streams have caused significant havoc. Likewise, the municipalities of Puerto Libertador and Montelíbano have joined this measure, facing similar situations of flooding and overflows.

In La Apartada, local authorities have declared a public calamity to deal with the floods affecting the community. Lorica, another seriously impacted municipality, remains on alert for the critical points of Palo de Agua, Nariño and Sarandelo, that historically overflow, affecting hundreds of families and causing crop losses.

It is likely that in the next few hours, Planeta Rica will also declare a public calamity. The rains in this town have caused flooding in urban and rural areas, knocking down more than four bridges and leaving several towns cut off.

The declaration of public calamity allows access to additional resources and measures to face emergencies and minimize the impact of the rains on the population and local infrastructure.
