Basavilbaso mourns the road tragedy on Route 39

The Municipality of Basavilbaso (Uruguay department) declared two days of mourning for the road tragedy on Route 39 in which four men from that town died. The only survivor of the incident was Juan Ruiz Orrico, head of the province’s Port Institute, who is in intensive care in Concepción del Uruguay.

The deceased were Leandro Almada, Lucas and Brian Izaguirre and Axel Rossi. After hearing the news, the mayor of the City of Riel, Hernán Besel, declared mourning and ordered that the flags remain at half-mast.

“Given the news that saddens the entire community of Basavilbaso due to the death of young people from our city, and through Decree 0519/24, the municipal administration of Mayor Hernán Besel has decided to declare mourning for the duration of two days in the city of “Basavilbaso”says the statement.

The decree also “orders the suspension of all public events on Thursday, June 20 and Friday, June 21, and the permanence of flags raised at half-mast.”

“We express on behalf of the entire community our deep regret, accompanying the families in the face of such irreparable loss,” the official statement concludes.

During yesterday afternoon it was also known that Brian Izaguirre was a referee for the Basavilbaso Regional League, while Lucas and Axel Rossi were players for Club Deportivo Peñarol. Meanwhile, Almada was a former player of that same institution.
