The Fourth Specialized Criminal Court of Santa Marta has handed down a sentence against two people involved in the attempted murder of social leader Romer Ordóñez.

Pierino Moscote Hernández, former mayor of the Tenerife municipality, Magdalena, was sentenced to 16 years and six months in prison, while Jhon Jairo Sampayo Orozco, a former paramilitary, received a sentence of 17 years and five months. The attack occurred on August 17, 2016 in a rural area of Tenerife.

The Prosecutor’s Office presented compelling evidence that links Moscote Hernández and Sampayo Orozco as responsible for the crime of attempted homicide.

Moscote Hernández was tried in absentia, since he has been a fugitive from justice since he was released after a previous capture for the same case in Chibolo, Magdalena.

According to the file, Romer Ordóñez was shot after denouncing the former mayor for presenting a false professional title. The bullets hit him in the neck and head, keeping him in critical condition for 43 days in the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital.
