The Argentine government announced to Japan its decision to withdraw from the Osaka 2025 Universal Exhibitionthe international mega exhibition that takes place every five years and in which the invited countries promote, exhibit and exchange innovation and development projects to improve the living conditions of people at all levels.

The confirmation that Argentina decided to remove the pavilion that it had reserved in that exhibition was made by the minister in charge of the event, Hanako Jimi, who stated that the reason is due to the economic problems that the country is going through.

Asked about this by the Spanish agency EFE, The Argentine Embassy in Japan did not want to comment for the moment about the country’s withdrawal from the Expo.

However, the Argentine government had given its commitment to be there. In November 2023, the Foreign Ministry had declared its participation in that event to be of National Interest, which is a mecca of business and dialogue on progress and development between countries. For this reason, the organizers estimate that they will attend 28 million visitors.

He Decree 161/2023 in which the Executive Branch had declared it to be of National Interest, the sample says that “participation in this type of meeting provides an important opportunity to disseminate and diversify Argentina’s exportable offer, as well as stimulate foreign direct investment in strategic sectors, contributing to positioning Argentina in the international context.”

But The cutting of State expenses was stronger than the speech of integration to the world that President Milei proclaims. The policy of cuts even eliminated the Advisory Commission that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs created two years ago for that international exhibition.

Argentina had initially communicated its intention to build your own pavilion (type A), whose construction and maintenance are the responsibility of the guest country and which is one of the main attractions of the Expo.

But when rumors emerged last month that the La Libertad Avanza government would withdraw participation, The organizers suggested Buenos Aires opt for a type C pavilionbuilt by Japan and whose costs are distributed among several participants. Or else one of typesmaller, easier to build and that the Asian country provides to those states that cannot build their own pavilion.

However, The negotiations would have stalled due to the country’s economic problemsaccording to the Japanese side.

In addition to Argentinathey also withdrew their participation Mexico, Russia, Estonia and the island territory of Niue. Each one for different reasons.

It is planned that the Osaka Expo 2025 be done between April 13 and October 13 of that year on the artificial island of Yumeshima, in the bay of the western Japanese city, with the participation of some 150 countries and regions. The event is expected to attract some 28 million visitors.
