Atacama Region begins preparation of Charging Infrastructure Master Plan for Electric Vehicles

  • With the aim of promoting electromobility in the Atacama region, a working group was held to develop the Charging Infrastructure Master Plan for Electric Vehicles, which will allow for concrete actions in the area.

Copiapó, June 21, 2024.- Within the framework of the Roadmap for the Advancement of Electromobility 2023-2026, the Seremi de Energía de Atacama and the Energy Sustainability Agency (AgenciaSE), held a Collaborative Workshop with the objective of developing the Public Charging Infrastructure Master Plan (PMICP) of the region, from where it was possible to obtain an accurate vision of what the development of this type of infrastructure in Atacama entails.

During the day, different actors from the public and private sectors participated, highlighting the participation of the Seremi de Energía Yenny Valenzuela, who highlighted the importance of carrying out this type of work. “With the presence of authorities and representatives from the public and private world, including academia, we held this participatory workshop on the Public Freight Infrastructure Master Plan, committed by the Government of the President Gabriel Boric in the Roadmap for the Advancement of Electromobility in Chile, which adds to the different efforts that we are making as a country for a good implementation of electromobility in cities of the Atacama region and the country, its infrastructure being fundamental for its correct development,” said Seremi Yenny Valenzuela.

Besides, the Head of Energy in Atacama He valued that “electromobility will help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise in cities, considerably improving the quality of life of our neighbors.”

This work is a collaborative effort to advance decarbonization in the area, strengthening electricity in transportation and other sectors of the economy.

Javier Contador, Charging Infrastructure Project Coordinator at AgenciaSE, commented that “the development of charging infrastructure is essential for the correct deployment of electromobility. We are satisfied with today’s event, with multiple actors we talked about the needs and opportunities posed by the Atacama region, with regard to public access charging infrastructure. We hope that this coordination of actors materializes in the short term, achieving a cargo network that enables transit through the different regions of our country.”

It should be noted that the activity also had the participation of the seremis of National Assets, Mónica Marin, of Mining, Juan Carlos Peña and of the Environment, Natalia Penroz, in addition to the directors of the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels-SEC , Iván Lillo, and from MOP Airports, Angélica Munizaga, also a representative of various public services, the private sector and academia.

Public Charging Infrastructure Master Plan

The preparation of the Public Charging Infrastructure Master Plan is one of the actions established in the Roadmap for the Advancement of Electromobility.

During the day, the attendees participated in work tables, in which they discussed sources of financing, availability of space for the implementation of charging infrastructure, states of the electrical networks, connection points and how to face large regional distances. to enable this infrastructure every 100 kilometers, which constitutes one of the great goals and challenges of the region. This work table is added to those already carried out in the regions of Tarapacá and Antofagasta.
