In the midst of the clashes between the Public Force and the FARC dissidents in the department of Cauca, the Departmental Police confirmed the capture of Sirley Daniela Ñuscué Hilamo, known in the armed structure as alias ‘The Nurse’. The 28-year-old woman was known for providing medical care to militiamen injured in combat.

The capture of alias ‘The Nurse’ occurred outside a medical center in the north of Cauca. She was charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and was brought before a control judge in Popayán. According to General William Salamanca, director of the National Police, Ñuscué also coordinated the supply of medicines and managed ambulance services for transfers to medical centers, using false identifications to evade police controls. Furthermore, she was the romantic partner of one of the leaders of the criminal organization, which operates in the municipalities of Caloto and Caldono.

This operation was carried out after a security council in Popayán, headed by President Gustavo Petro and the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez. During the council, the ‘Mission Cauca’ strategy was presented, which contemplates new measures in the face of the wave of violence in the region. Petro did not rule out the possibility of declaring a state of emergency in the department to guarantee the execution of public works in the most affected areas.

“The one who wants to keep the utility of the public works is not the contractor, but the armed gang. He worries me about how projects and works are done. Would a state of exception merit? Discuss it. They already knocked one down on me when the children of La Guajira didn’t have water, but let’s discuss it,” Petro said.

For his part, the Minister of Defense indicated that the strategy would benefit more than 5,000 families in the Micay Canyon region, replacing illicit crops with food crops such as beans and coffee. “The private sector also joins in this participation, who will join us with dozens of businessmen so that this substitution of legal projects is truly successful in this region of the country,” said the minister.
