La Rioja will have almost 30,000 more inhabitants in 2039 thanks to immigration

Nothing new under the sun in a future with more demographic shadows than lights. Within 15 years, La Rioja would have a census of 349,296 inhabitants, 29,664 more than today, according to the Population Projections 2024-2074 study. made public this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which in the case of the autonomous communities, reduces the study period until 2039.

In the case of the community, the population increase would be 9.28%, an increase that, again, would come hand in hand with immigration. Specifically, according to the predictions of the INE, the number of residents in the region born abroad would almost double in the next three decades, going from 54,070 in 2024 to the 99,546 that are expected in 2039. The weight of the The foreign population would thus grow from the current 16.91% to 28.49%.

The INE study also confirms the trend toward population aging that La Rioja is experiencing, like the rest of the Spanish autonomous communities. The number of people over 65 years of age would go from the current 71,670 to 98,265, with an increase of almost six points in their weight on the total census, from 22.42% in 2024 to 29.13% in 2039. At the same time , the young sap, Riojans under 18 years old will reduce their total weight from the current 17.75% (56,753) to 13.89% in 15 years (48,550).

As for the State as a whole, Spain would gain more than five million inhabitants in the next 15 years and almost six million by 2074 if current demographic trends were maintained.

The percentage of the population aged 65 and over, which currently stands at 20.4% of the total, would reach a maximum of 30.5% around 2055.

The population born in Spain would gradually decrease and would go from representing 81.9% of the total currently to 61.0% within 50 years.

The Balearic Islands and Comunitat Valenciana (both with 19.0%) would register the greatest relative population growth, while the Principality of Asturias (-4.1%) and Extremadura (-3.4%) would present the greatest decreases.
