The Secretariat of Economic Development and Competitiveness, in coordination with the National Natural Parks Unit and EcoGourmet, offered training on the management and control of lionfish to artisanal fishermen of Santa Marta.
The event took place in the Gastronomic Plaza of the Public Market and focused on the management plan for this species, as well as the protocols corresponding to its capture, extraction and final disposal, as stipulated in Resolution 0675 of 2013. During During the training, fishermen received detailed and practical information on how to address the problem of lionfish, an invasive species that threatens the marine biodiversity of the region. The training included explanations on the most effective methods to control the population of this species, ensuring its adequate disposal to minimize environmental impact, and its use as raw material for the production of food products.

Through EcoGourmet, this training included raising awareness among the final consumer, that is, promoting the meat of this species as a dish that can be included on the table. In other words, the objective is to strengthen the value chain of this fish, promoting its sale.

With these activities, the District Mayor’s Office of Santa Marta advances in compliance with Ruling T-606 of 2015 of the Constitutional Court. This ruling promotes a vision of shared responsibility between the State and society, recognizing nature as a subject of rights. In addition, it highlights the importance of protecting areas of special ecological relevance, such as the Tayrona National Natural Park.

John Cabrera, project formulator for the Undersecretariat of Rural Development, in the fishing, fish farming and livestock sector, said that the objective is to train as many fishermen as possible in the control and management of lionfish, sensitize them about the ecological importance of this species and the commercial potential for the sector.

The Secretariat of Economic Development and Competitiveness continues to work together with artisanal fishermen to preserve natural resources and guarantee a prosperous and balanced future for Santa Marta.
