In New Orleans he participated in the struggles for the independence of Mexico and when Benito Juárez triumphed he went to the Aztec country, where he was secretary of the Benemérito and deputy to the Federal Congress on seven occasions. During the War of ’95 he was a revolutionary agent of the Republic of Cuba in Arms before the Mexican government. His poems appeared in the collection of poems “El lud del desterrado”.

June 24, 1896Gómez, camped at the El Oriente sugar mill, receives news of an expedition commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Rafael Portuondo, Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Gómez issues orders to Calixto García, settled in Las Tunas, to march to Baracoa and secure supplies and men. The expedition had arrived in Baconao, and was received by José Maceo. It was one of the most complete and powerful that the mambises welcomed and the one that created the most factions due to the contradictory provisions surrounding its destination, since José planned to limit the law of the Government Council that declared the expeditions property of the State and dependence on the Secretariat. of the Treasury.

June 24, 1898Against all military logic, against the Cuban advice and the strict orders of the General in Chief, the North American troops, under the orders of General Wheeler, engaged in combat with the Spanish forces that were defending the important position on the route to Santiago. The Cuban forces also began combat with the Spanish from another position. The inexplicable Spanish retreat granted victory to Wheeler, who had requested reinforcements from Siboney. The baptism of fire of the Yankee troops was nothing worthy of praise.
