The Liberal Party has once again postponed its national convention, originally scheduled for August, now rescheduled for October 11, 2023. This adjustment to the calendar responds to a complex context marked by internal legal and strategic challenges. Former president César Gaviria, current director of the Liberal Party, has signed a resolution that modifies the date of the crucial party convention. This meeting, which determines the guidelines and leadership of the community, was initially scheduled for August 30 under the motto “building on what has been built.” However, due to the demands of the recent electoral processes and the need to maintain vigilance and attention to these events, the party has decided to postpone the date.

The last convention was held in 2020 and, according to internal and constitutional rules, another one should have been held in 2022. However, the party justified its omission due to the concentration on the national elections, essential to overcome the threshold of votes required to maintain its legal personality.

The decision has not been without controversy. Congressman Juan Carlos Losada has expressed his concern, suggesting that the delay could be a strategy by Gaviria to maintain control of the party. Furthermore, in April 2023, a lawsuit was filed with the Council of State to annul the party’s legal status, alleging non-compliance with Article 108 of the Constitution, which added more pressure to hold the convention.
