In Duitama, the sculpture dedicated to César Rincón, a notorious Colombian bullfighter, was demolished by local authorities. The figure that adorned the entrance to the César Rincón Bullring since 2003 was removed with plans to relocate it.

The work will not be replaced in its original place but will be sent to Bogotá to integrate a collection in a museum of the Department of Social Prosperity.

The decision to remove the statue emerged from an initiative by the mayor of Duitama, José Luis Bohórquez, who mentioned that the statue will be moved to a space dedicated to memory near the same square.

Bohórquez emphasized the need to adapt public spaces to current cultural and sports practices, highlighting the prohibition of activities such as bullfighting.

He argued that the figure of the bullfighter, although part of the city’s heritage and culture, required maintenance and should not occupy a prominent place at the entrance to the plaza due to the nature of its representation, which no longer complies with current regulations. .

The mayor also mentioned that the decision not only responds to a change in physical location, but also symbolizes a readjustment in the cultural values that are promoted in the urban space, proposing a transition towards a more inclusive and representative environment of current values.

For his part, Mateo Centeno, manager of the Institute for Physical Education, Recreation and Sports, which manages the plaza, confirmed that the removal was carried out by a contracted company and that the sculpture would receive conservation treatment before its transfer to the capital of the country.

Centeno added that this movement seeks to preserve the work and at the same time adapt it to new exhibition contexts.
